German soldiers will soon be training in shoes made in Warwickshire after a sportswear firm landed a lucrative contract with the military.

UK Gear, based in UK House, Freer Street, Nuneaton, design the cross-country trail running shoe, named the XC-09, and its product beat stiff competition from global brands to win the contract.

The firm, which employs 10 people, was invited to tender by the German military's quartermasters after they heard about one of the company's high performance running shoes which was designed with advice from the British Army Physical Training Corps.

UK Gear's training shoes have now been adopted by military personnel worldwide.

Managing Director David Hinde said: "When it comes to developing innovative high performance sportswear, working with the armed forces is fantastic. I can't think of anyone who could challenge us more.

"I'm really proud that we've been selected, it really is testament to the quality of our running shoes."

Not only has the XC-09 passed the German military standard with flying colours, but it has also been given NATO approval.

The shoe is strong but flexible with a highly durable sole and is ideally suited for off-road running.

Mr Hinde said: "The performance sports industry doesn't stand still so if we are to remain at the top of our game we need to continually innovate and work with the best people to design the very best equipment.

"It's a really exciting time for everyone at UK Gear as the launch of our second performance running shoe coincides with the announcement of two new distributors in the USA and Singapore. In addition we are continuing to work with the British Army on designs for two new running shoes that we hope to launch early in 2006."

The XC-09 shoe is available to buy at www.ukgear.com for £65.
