Army bosses are hoping their troops' reputation will help them in their latest invasion - of the sportswear market.

They plan to give market leaders Nike and Adidas a run for their money by putting their name to a new style of training shoe.

An Army spokesman said: "We hope people will think that if these trainers are good enough for the British Army then they are good enough for them."

The £80 PT-03 trainers made by UK Gear bear the Army's crossed sword insignia.

The spokesman said: "The money is an extra. We want to make sure to only products available with our branding are products we want to back."
